Is it 4.5.605? I'm installing that update right now. I was one of the minority who actually got Gingerbread to work great on my X and it worked very well for a while... then about 2-3 weeks ago they hit me with a patch and ever since then things have been very slow and my phone crashes a lot. I've also developed this annoying issue where some SMS messages come through 6-8 times across multiple senders and carriers.

Yes.  My phone was bogging down a lot, but now it's as fast as the day I bought it.

Meanwhile, owners of the original Droid are still shuffling along with Froyo 2.2.2.

I don't have major problems with my phone so I plan to keep it awhile longer, but it sure seems slow and dull compared to the newer android phones.

Gingerbread was rife with issues when it hit the market. I don't know why mine worked because nobody else that I know who has the X could get it to work right. The X got it first but they pulled it from all the other "new" models for a while and I'm not sure that the original Droid would work well with it anyway. I think they even pulled it from the X for a while for people who hadn't installed it. It was rushed.

I don't see how you keep a phone that long... I'm a nerd but I'm way past ready for an upgrade and I've only had my X for about a year. Less than a year, actually. It's made worse by the fact that I dented my camera lens at some point so now ever pic I take is blurry in the bottom right portion of the pic.

I'm considering going with the iPhone next time but I'll have to see what Droids are out and it pisses me off that apparently the iPhone 5 is not going to be 4G.

I'm a nerd like you, but I'm also a very CHEAP nerd. So I have the desire for the latest and greatest but I rarely buy it unless it's been a LONG time since I upgraded (or I get a fantastic deal). CObh used my last upgrade to upgrade her phone instead, and I was really okay with that. But when the next upgrade discount is available I will think about it.

EDIT: I'm not sure how long I've had the phone but Wiki says it came out in late 2009, so I think it was probably January of 2010. So it'll be 2 years old before long.

TRObh just upgraded our phones for the first time this past weekend.  Hers was from 2000 and mine was a flip phone from 2002.    The lady at the store laughed when she saw them, even though she promised TRObh she wouldn't.    I have no idea what the new ones are, but they do have touch screens.  Since we don't have data plans, they are just for calls and texts.  Oh yeah, I forgot, the big bonus is that they both have cameras; neither of our old phones had those.

I've had my Droid 2 just over a year and I'm ready to upgrade. I'm wanting the iPhone, too. My holdup is that I'm too cheap to pay the ridiculous full price, I'm too scared to trust a used one off eBay, and I refuse to renew my contract and get stuck with the 2 GB data cap so that I can get the discounted phone. Plus I really like the makeover of the Droid OS (whichever version that was; I only downloaded it last week but I had delayed doing so for a while). So I might just stick with what I have for a while.

That is why I went ahead with the iphone 4, so I could early upgrade to the 6 with 4G (though I'm probably going to go with the Verizon version then as I am fed up with AT&T's lack of useabilility at public events

I'm due an upgrade in March.  I will require dual-core and 4G.  If the iPhone 5 doesn't have 4G, I will sadly have to rule it out.  Right now, the Droid Bionic is the only Verizon phone that has all I'm looking for, but there are supposed to be a few more coming out by Christmas.

One benefit to living out in the sticks. I don't have to worry about 4G for a few years.

How much data do you guys find that you average on your phones? Except for when I'm out sometimes and need to connect my phone to my computer to send some photos or documents back to the office, I almost never use my phone to surf the 'net. I have a few apps that automatically update throughout the day, such as current weather, news, etc. But aside from that, I use my phone for nothing but talking and texting and occasionally emailing. Yet according to Verizon, I average 1,200-1,500 mb per month in usage.

I don't even look because I have unlimited data but I bet it's a lot. I use mine constantly.

I have unlimited data for now but a contract renewal with Verizon is going to require either a 2gb cap or the higher priced data package. That's why I was looking at mine...trying to determine if 2gb would be a reasonable plan. If my usage stats are reliable, I don't see how the base 2gb package is reasonable for anyone who uses a data phone for what a data phone is intended.

2 GB covers most of my smartphone users at work but the heavy users have to have 4 GB. I bet you have something that is pulling down more data than you realize.

By the way you can blame Apple for the phasing out of unlimited data. When they show up with a carrier, unlimited data goes away.

Could be. I need to check it out and see where my phone is consuming data.

I'm intentionally ignoring the second part of your post so that I don't have to point out that there's a difference between coincidence and reality.

And here I wondered why my phone was slow.  I got mine in may of 2010 and supposedly I can get an upgrade in November.   Not sure if I will but no e to have the option.

It's no coincidence. Two things happened when the iPhone came to Verizon... Verizon stopped offering unlimited data (because of network load) and Verizon did away with "new every two" (because Apple made them).

I really like Apple mobile products and I think I'd really like Macs, but I abhor Apple as a company... much more so than Microsoft.

To show you how in-tune I am, I had no idea Verizon had stopped the New Every Two deal. Oh well.

But, anyway, Apple can't help it that they have such a good (and/or popular) product that networks become overloaded.

I honestly think that Apple has some angle (kickbacks on the data overages or strain on the App Store) that causes them to power play the carriers into doing that. I don't have proof though.

Verizon didn't need to do it because they already had millions of Droids on the network. At least part of their business for the iPhone was Droid converts. I don't think the iPhone caused nearly as much of a network usage bump as Android did.

I think Verizon may have gone to limited useage simply because AT&T did.   It's obviously a more profitable way to go, and when your major competitor no longer offers the unlimited service, why keep it?

That's possible, but the timing was interesting. AT&T did it a long time before Verizon did it. Verizon didn't do it until a couple of months after the iPhone was active.

Sprint may end its unlimited plans if it begins carrying the iPhone 5, despite claiming it offers simplicity and value over other carriers....

Hmmm....it makes you think the IPhone might just be an inefficient user of bandwidth.  Probably all the personal information they are broadcasting back to Apple!
