Admittedly, I'm kind of a watch geek. If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to collect high-end watches. So while the idea of a smart watch may not appeal to many, I want one. Or maybe more than one.
This is a relatively new category of tech, but smart watches have evolved design-wise in the 18 months or so they've been on the market. The early models were ugly square things on rubber straps. Not exactly something you'd want to wear in a formal setting. But recently, Motorola and LG have unveiled more attractive rounded models:
Those are hot. I'd wear either one of them anywhere. But I was really looking forward to seeing what apple had up its sleeve. After all, this was the company that has historically melded tech with design in ways that no one had ever done before. The home of wizard designer Jony Ive. This would be their first all-new product in four years, and since they are relatively late to this party, they've had some time to learn from their competitors' mistakes. So surely their watch would be the most beautiful of them all, right? Well...
Sorry, but that thing looks like something straight out of 1986. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I really think that's tacky.
Let's face it- at this point, no one is going to buy a smart watch for the functionality. They all have to link to your phone via bluetooth, so is there really much more convenience in accessing your apps via your wrist vs. your phone? No. The only real differentiator between them is design, and IMO Apple is seriously lagging behind their Android competitors in that regard. Have they lost their mojo without Steve Jobs?
