I attempted to do my civic duty and watch the World Cup. It's painful, but a few minutes in we scored! Oops. Offside was called. This rule is asinine in soccer and hockey (blue line).

The argument I hear is without it teams would cherry pick. So? Adjust your strategy. Besides, I'm not teams want to go down a defender, but they'd have a choice.

Last season's final AYSO game. Late in the game. My son scored. The ref called offsides. I nearly got kicked out…I instantly transformed into one of "those" youth sports parents.

This season I was actually called upon to help officiate a game in a pinch. I told the head ref that I still don't get that offsides thing. He said, and I quote, "The best way I can explain it is that if you ever understand offsides completely, you need to get a life."

I've accepted that I'll never really understand soccer, let alone enjoy it as a pastime, and I chalk it all up to that asinine offsides rule. Leave it to communists to dream up something like that.

That's a great quote from the ref. I can't imagine dealing with it as a parent.
