Georgia was left out of the playoffs because if they had been included, (meaning that two SEC teams were in the playoffs again) the other conferences would have joined UCF in calling for an eight team playoff. The powers that be don't want that but the outcry for eight teams would have gotten considerably louder.

Spread this around.

Why do the powers that be not want eight teams?

I have heard it's likely in two years when the current contract is up.

I'll give a possible reason....less money per team.  But with more teams, it seems the majority would be in favor.

OSU folks might start this up anyway.....Being left out of the playoffs 2 years in a row losing 1 game each year and winning the Big 10 Championship both years...IMO it will go to 8 teams before long.

I agree with most that UGA is probably one of the four best teams. But after that fake punt call, they have no one to blame but themselves.

According to the talking heads today there is "no momentum towards an eight team playoff" but there could have been if two SEC schools got in. Remember, the money brokers didn't want a playoff to begin with. They wanted the bowl system continued because they controlled it. Everything I have heard indicates that the only people wanting an eight team playoff are schools like UCF.

Hey, it's a conspiracy theory. I don't have to believe it. I just have to convince others to believe it.

That's what your talking heads said. I heard on ESPN radio this am (someone with a last name of Tucker) say he thinks they will go eight games in 2021.  Or maybe he said he favored it but had not always.  So maybe not a consensus.

When you say money guys, I assume you mean corporate sponsors and/or whoever controls the stronger bowls.  Rose Bowl is always opposed to change and they are the ones that forced the NY Eve semifinals to avoid competition with the Rose Bowl.  Unless of course the Rose Bowl is one of the playoffs.

The Rose Bowl is run by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation, which is a big deal in Pasadena, which, as I know from watching The Graduate is where all the Old Money in LA is.

I guess they just like their traditions.  But they may be one of the main opponents.  The Rose Bowl and Rose Bowl parade bring a lot of money and attention to Pasadena.
