There have been some high schools here that's been effected by it....A couple have missed some games. 3 schools here have missed 3 games to start the season because school went to distant learning....But they've gotten the OK to start next week. As far as I know the Metro Nashville schools aren't playing and the Memphis public schools aren't playing.
One thing with colleges is with classes starting you have students all converging on the campus. Plus college age kids no matter how much you tell them aren't going to go back to their dorms or apartments and just sit there. You will have some dumb asses go out and get infected and bring it back to the team...Much like what happened to the St. Louis Cards when some dumb asses decide to go to a casino and then infected 20 players and the team didn't play for 2 weeks... Most HS players go to school in their own community and then go home and their parents can somewhat control them.
If our regional health departments in TN don't stop making high school teams pause for 2 weeks for a single case, there's no way this season will be completed. I understand the necessity of contact tracing, but I'm not sure how I feel about 14-day quarantines simply because someone sat close to someone at school for 15 minutes. I'd like to see the stats on how many of those kids actually go on to get sick. I'll bet it's a minuscule percentage.
I've talked to some coaches in some school systems and they say their athletes have chosen virtual learning just to avoid a situation where the person they're sitting next to in class tests positive and they have to miss 14 days of action. Our school system doesn't have that option; students who choose virtual learning aren't permitted to play sports (I don't think that would hold up in court, but so far no one has challenged it).
