I want a new coach. I like Dooley, but I have no confidence in his ability to turn this program into an SEC championship contender.

Unless we can land a big name (which we can't), a coaching change is just going to keep us in the cellar for longer. Unless, that is... a miracle happens and we get lucky and get THAT guy. I don't have much confidence in Dooley right now either, but the alternative isn't good either.

I don't think you're stupid, but I agree that it would probably just set the program back further to do it now.
This is when I cross the fence, though. I can't be neutral on Dooley anymore, and I have lost my patience. I don't know what a reasonable target is next year-- 8 wins? 9 wins? -- but if we fail to get there, I'm done.

I've never really talked about my feelings about Dooley because many on here perceive me to be too negative anyways. But, I've had my doubts about him ever since the LSU debacle last year. I like him personally, but I just don't think he's going to be able to get it done. Something about his sideline demeanor really bugs me. He's just too animated. Looks like someone that's had too much caffeine. Yeah, I know, when he's arguing with refs that's one thing, they're all like that. But he seems jittery all the time. You don't see Saban, Stoops or most of the other top coaches look like a nervous cat all the time. And that's besides all the other issues. But still, I don't think we can fire him after only 2 years. But he better show marked improvement next year.

If a no-brainer hire was available I'd be fine with making a change, but I'm not sure who that is. Dooley has lost me though I still like the guy. That having been said, if he can pull in a top 20 class full of guys who will make it four years we'll be better off making a change next year - I think.

I want him gone now.........................We are a weak team physically, mentally and very fragile......................i am tired of excuses, no excuse for this loss.......................  We can have a new coach and staff it will cost us 7-8 million/yr to do so.  |

The most disheartening thing about this is I understand why they won't fire him now. It makes sense that he's only had two years and getting a great coach would be almost impossible. I just don't think that any of us believe he can turn it around. If that is the case, he eventually will be fired, and that makes it even worse to know that we are just biding our time. Letting Dooley go now seems irresponsible, but not firing him is most likely just delaying the inevitable.
This is what makes me sad.

I'll agree with that (and welcome to the board). At this point I will say that I do not believe he is the guy to lead us back, but I believe we need another year for stability's sake. Some will say "if he's not the guy, get it over with now rather than prolong the inevitable". And I can totally understand that point of view. I just think that for the overall health of the program we have to just endure so that we can stock the cupboard further. I will c&p a post I saw on another board that sums up how I feel pretty well:
"I honestly don't know what my reaction would be if they fire Dooley. Excited? Relieved? Embarrassed? Depressed?
Can any good come by firing him? Can any good come from keeping him?" |

Even Zook got three years at UF. And recruited most of the guys on a NC roster while he was there. Ditto for Shula at bammer. Dooley might not be the guy to elevate this program to the level we want it to be, but I think the players he's recruiting are. And if Dooley's fired now, we're going to lose a lot of those players. Right now, this program needs stability more than anything else.

I agree with everything that you're saying, just that it's so frustrating to be in this position. In August I knew we would take lumps this season, but expected to be excited for 2012. Now it's just miserable to think we aren't going to be better, and a coaching change next year might mean Bray, Hunter, and Rogers all leave.
Stability or no, there seems to be little relief in the near future.
