Yes, I am not surprised, unfortunately. My opinion about the Osprey goes all the way back to my senior design class at UT, when our project was designing a vertical takeoff aircraft for medical emergencies that would be faster than a helicopter. There were 4 teams, two went with an Osprey-derived craft and two (including mine) based it on the Harrier. A mechanical engine like what the Osprey uses is just so much more susceptible to failure and more difficult to rotate than a jet engine. With a jet, you can angle the nozzle and be fine, but with a rotor you have to move the entire engine assembly. Even as a senior undergraduate, I thought the Osprey was a big safety hazard and nothing I have seen since has changed that opinion, it only re-enforced it.
And despite the fact that it looks like a regular airplane, it's incapable of taking off or landing like one. The rotors go too close to the ground.
One of the big advantages of the Osprey could have been or perhaps was supposed to have been that it could take off and land horizontally when it needed to (which the Harrier can), but they were unable or unwilling to do that.
So yeah...it's a complete turd.
