Dunno, but if his name isn't Jon Gruden, why in the hell are we discussing it?

If you are talking about Petersen... a) he won't leave Boise and b) Dan Hawkins.

I am. UCLA pursued him last year and offered $3+M. Los Angeles is much different than Boise and I can see why he turned it down as I think he is looking for a "fit" and not cash.

I think he is a good coach. I think he has benefited from playing weak schedules and only playing one or two big games a year.

Also I reiterate that I don't think he's leaving Boise.

I would take any of Patterson, Petersen, Gruden, Charlie Strong. I'm not a Gruden or bust guy.

Uh oh, my list looks way too close to Revolver's. In fact, I'll state Gruden is less proven at the college level than the rest, but all pale in comparison to Petrino. And yes, we can be discussing the finer points of Litton's burgers and I will work Petrino into the conversation - at least until we hire a coach.

Gruden is less proven than the rest, yes, but so was Pete Carroll. And Gruden was a more accomplished NFL coach than Carroll.

Lately I've heard that Petrino is unofficially blackballed in the SEC.

I'd believe the blackball rumor. Slive has done some good stuff, but he's also a micromanager at times. IF the rumor is true I'm not too happy, but that's another discussion.

It should also be noted Gene Stallings was like Carroll, but if you looked closer you could see why he hadn't won big. Hey, that Belichek guy didn't tear it up in Cleveland and would have been viewed by me as less proven. In the NFL you're really GM dependent.

On the side of things Al Groh seemed destined to do about what he did at UVA.

I agree about GM dependence and I think Gruden struggled with that in Tampa.

I'm not going to act like Gruden is zero risk, but I think his appeal to people like me is obvious. His time on MNF has kept him in the face of the public and he's popular in that job. He has a Super Bowl ring and he's charismatic and dynamic. I think he's a good X and O coach. Tennessee needs somebody to give them legitimacy.

Tennessee needs somebody to give them legitimacy.

That more than anything else is why Gruden is worth big money. Nothing screams legitimacy like a guy who walks away from what many would call the best job in football and passes by several NFL teams while he's at it to take a job at a school that the rest of the SEC has convinced themselves is now irrelevant.

I think he could be a home run, but I'm a boring guy by nature who prefers sure bets (if such exist). That's why I'll be happy if he's hired and thrilled with the publicity, but wait a couple of years to see how things go. There will be a learning curve when dealing with academic issues, BUT if he's surrounded by good people he'll be fine.

I'm not anti-Gruden at all, just not on the sure thing bandwagon. But yeah, he's in my top five and I'd gladly part with $5 million/year for him. Just make sure the buyout wouldn't bite us in a worst case scenario.

Hard to argue with that logic.

Totally agree. Maybe equal to legitimacy is stability. It has been a constant rip current in and around our program since 2008, most being negative. Someone needs to calm the waters and sell to recruits he and his staff are here for the long term.

I'd rather have Gary Patterson coach UT. Patterson has had to Coach against tougher competition than Hawkins at Boise State

Gruden forced out the GM that had built the team and then failed miserably with himself the GM in all but name

After Gruden, I would love to have Patterson. Excellent recruiter and coach, gee can you imagine having both those things working at a high level at UT. I think I'd have to take a pill.

His son had a brain tumor and spinal cancer in 2000 while he was at Oregon. He is cancer free now.

You are correct.  Here is an article:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/george_schroeder/09/03/chris-petersen/index.html

Sounds like he's committed to being with his family, has it in Idaho so that it works that way for him, and doesn't want to change for ego or money.

His son  is now 14, so maybe if our next coach doesn't work out?

Side note:  the article is from 2009, and mentions "Boise State defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox".  Sigh.
