This won't happen because the SEC doesn't have the best team, or because it loses in the playoff . . . it will be because SEC parity will manage to victimize all of its contenders. It's happened before . . . remember 2007? LSU and UGA were both contenders but each suffered two SEC losses . . . LSU to Kentucky and Arkansas, and UGA to South Carolina and Tennessee. Were it not for fluke losses by West Virginia and Missouri, LSU would not have made the title game.

That will probably happen again, even with a 4-team playoff. It's entirely reasonable to expect that four teams could have one loss or less while every SEC team has two and for the SEC to be left out.

If you think about it, the SEC was very close to having 3 of the top 4 teams, but also close to having none of the top 4 . . . Alabama lost to A&M and narrowly beat LSU and UGA. UGA lost to SC and narrowly beat UT, UF, and Kentucky. Florida lost to UGA and narrowly beat A&M and Mizzou. LSU lost to UF and Bama and narrowly won several conference games.

The bowl games made it clear that no other conference can match the SEC in two ways that matter: coaching and a size/speed combination. The SEC has always been fast but in terms of size and strength they are bringing something to the table that no conference has ever really put together. Watch UF, LSU, South Carolina, and Alabama play defense. Watch the offensive lines of a dozen teams in this league, including UT. Every nonconference game is just a physical mismatch and when there is a lot at stake, those SEC athletes tend to rise to the occasion. That also means we inevitably beat each other up and that will eventually break the streak.
