If you missed it earlier, Butch Jones' twitter account retweeted an odd tweet:

My immediate reaction (like a lot of other UT fans, I suspect) was "Whoa!"

A few minutes later, this tweet from Butch popped up:

I don't want to say I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt, but typically when your account is hacked, the hackers are gonna tweet spam-related stuff...Click here to lose weight fast, click here to earn $2,000 a week sitting on your butt doing nothing, etc. Not some random, weird tweet like this. Of course, Butch doesn't say HOW his account was compromised; he just says it was compromised...which doesn't mean hacked. It could be something like a player getting ahold of his phone and playing a prank on him.

It has the potential to be a little bit of a black eye, though.

A likely scenario to me is an accidental retweet perhaps.  I know I've accidentally favorited tweets a few times.. althought Twitter does ask you to confirm for a retweet.

I saw it last night and I was really shocked.  I hope it blows over quickly.

It seems to me that it's a re-tweet he was not paying attention to.

My take is, who cares?  He is not the one saying it.

That may not be a typical response though.  If I was a PLAYER and I saw that, I might even like it though, since players tweet stuff exactly like that constantly.

I think that's the most likely scenario, too. My thinking, though, is why would you say your account has been compromised? I know that's the easiest way to explain it, and to me it isn't a big deal, but it's the sort of thing that our muckraking friends in the sports media (think Gregg Doyel) would eat up.

Not really the point, IMO, that you, me, or Creek cares about what the tweet said.  The point is the climate of political correctness in society today.  That one word can really screw up the affairs of a public figure.  And I'm no social media expert, but when you retweet something it's the same as tweeting it or at the very least it's like saying "hey, I saw this and I agree so much that I want to repeat it to my followers".

Fortunately I don't think anything will come from it.  I puckered a bit when I first saw it, though.

I know that's what you're talking about.

I am addressing the larger world of PC that you mention.  It won't catch on there simply because it was not HIS tweet, and the person doing the tweet is "in the club" of those allowed to say such things.

It could be a huge problem if Butch was actually saying that.  And yes, it is a double standard and one I am tired of, but it is what it is.

You're right that it isn't going to "catch on," because it already would've if it were going to. But you're wrong in believing that it won't catch on simply because Butch only retweeted it. In the twitter world, even RTs are a sin in the eyes of the PC police. Actually, there were 10,000 people named in a lawsuit in the UK a couple of years ago because they retweeted an erroneous tweet from the BBC claiming that someone was a child molester. Here in America, there have been a number of people in the public eye who have caught flack over a questionable RT. Go to Twitter and look at the tweet in question and you can see a number of UT fans giving Butch heck over the RT.

As Vinnie said, the most likely scenario is that it was a mistake. Or, as Butch said, his account truly was compromised. Either way, it isn't a big deal because we all know he didn't RT it on purpose. But we can probably be thankful that the muckrakers at CBS Sports, etc., had bigger fish to fry over the weekend.

I don't agree.  It's more of a gut feel for what's out there, but re-tweeting a black person saying "nigga" just doesn't have legs IMO.

Beyond that, there is a WORLD of difference between re-tweeting that someone is a CHILD MOLESTER and the word "nigga".

Not an even comparison at all IMO.
