Seems logical to me he deserves the same pay as a Freeze or a Mullen.   Now, are Freeze & Mullen being over-paid?  I guess that is for another discussion....

This stuff is pretty much a what the other guy got thing. He deserves a "restructuring". Why not? If he pulls it off next year (sece or better), he'll get a nice pop in salary.

He lost 4 games by a total of 17 points. Hell. Dooley had 17 put on him by Oregon in the third quarter. The ship is righted, just need a little maturity and a tad more depth and we are in the hunt.

I am all for coaches, or anybody in any profession for that matter, getting what the market will allow.  I am a capitalist.  

That said, UT finished 8-4 - pretty much what most with a brain expected.  Does Butch really deserve a raise at this point for doing what was expected of him?  That's a question up for debate, and both sides would have a good argument.  

But another "that said", when Mark Stoops has a $15 million dollar buyout of his contract it just shows how screwed up the whole Power 5 coaching system is.  There is no way any responsible group of adults should ever agree to a $15 million figure to buy out somebody who has failed at his job.  

Like I said, get all the market will allow, but stay humble.  All that separates these guys from $40K per year high school coaches are a few breaks here and there.  I'm not in to coach worship, because in the end all of them are just coaching a game.  It's not life and death like so many of them try to make themselves out to be in charge of.

Lot of truth in here. Butch is getting what he's getting because it's what UT has to do to stay competitive for a number of reasons, and it says something-- something bad-- about college football.

I'm starting to think that big time sports are in a bubble, and it's going to burst, or alternatively, go into a long decline. The arms race was barely sustainable as it was, and now media/TV rights don't look to be as valuable going forward as media giants like ESPN are having to rethink their whole financial and delivery models.

This is true but in the case of cable sports, the market was artificially constrained-- inflated?-- by the bundling. ESPN's profits and thus its TV rights in all major sports skyrocketed in no small part due to the fact that they could hold all cable providers hostage in order to charge larger and larger subscriber fees.

Cable becoming a freer, more direct-to-consumer market is bad news for ESPN and thus bad news for the pocketbooks of all sports that rely on it. But that might turn out to be a good thing in the long run.

Yep, and again consumers drove it because we went along with it.  And please notice that I said we - I am as guilty as the next person. 

I am all for being able to access and pay for what one wants and not have to take what we don't want, which is the direction we are thankfully headed.
