Well I guess he will have to wait to fire or demote Pruitt and take over the team himself. 

(I kid).

Having said that, even if as some claim his contract specifically says "head coach", then the solution is obvious. 

Fulmer comes back, makes Pruitt the "co-head coach" in charge of the defense, but with Fulmer overall calling all the shots.  Then Pruitt gets mad and quits.
