6'10", 280 lb Dan Skipper. Projects as a left tackle. No need to reread that . . . 6'10". Dude is massive. Obviously the height (leverage) is the biggest concern, and he needs to put on weight. The tallest OL I can remember at UT was Will Ofenheusle at 6'8" and nobody on the current team is taller than 6'6".

His offer list is okay (and includes some schools with strong academics . . . must be reasonably smart), and some big time programs were showing interest, but what got me is watching his video . . . it's tough to make highlight videos for OL but I was impressed with two things I saw:

* He finishes every play, pushing guys down the field frequently through the whistle. This tells me he is having fun, is highly motivated, or is just mean . . . and those are three pretty good qualities in a lineman.

* He appears to be able to run, and is willing to sprint down the field to the 2nd and 3rd level to make blocks on running plays. There is one highlight late in the video where he appears to be keeping up with the secondary in their pursuit of the ball carrier down the far sideline. There are a lot of highlights of him pulling, and he seems pretty athletic in open space.

Ron McKeeferey, here's your project for summer 2013 and beyond: make a monster of this kid.

I've seen this question on another message board or two, and I had the same thought:  How tough does it make it for a QB to throw in that direction with a 6'10" LT?  The QB certainly has to be at least in the 6'4" - 6'5" range himself, which is why a QB like a Charlie High (seen him listed as tall as 6'2", but I have met him and if he is in reality over 6' I would be shocked) isn't being offered by bigger (no pun intended) programs to this point.

As I have said before, I tend to go by offer lists than anything else when it comes to recruiting.  Skipper's list is as you say okay, but not great.  I'm fine with this take, since we are in pretty good shape with young linemen right now.  If that weren't the case, you might not offer him this early, but as is you take the chance that he will be ready to play after a redshirt year and a couple of years in the S&C program.

I wonder that a lot myself, but keep in mind that there have been some very, very tall tackles . . . consider Jonathan Ogden, who is 6'9" and should be a hall of famer a year from now. The only tall QB that he ever protected was Joe Flacco (6'6") . . . all of the other Raven QBs were more in the 6'3"- 6'4" range. So I guess we overestimate the problem to some degree. If you think about release point, the distance behind the line the QB usually throws from, and the way tackles split out wide and to the sides of the QB on many downfield pass plays, the difference between a 6'6" tackle and a 6'10" tackle may be minimal.

I'm fine with this one too, as I think the coaches saw something raw with this guy that is hard to coach. If he's a smart guy (a google search revealed a 3.9 GPA), then that's great for UT in a number of ways.

Ughh I hate getting old.  What was the guys name that came out of Clinton in the early 90s and ended up playing for the Bucs?  He was pretty freaking tall....

That's him.  If I remember correctly, he started off as a DL, got abused (specifically by Georgia) and switched to OL.  Wasn't he the one that they worked with Antoine Davis when they would put both tackles on the left side and say "we are running right here and you cannot stop us"....

I remember they used to have posters of Davis and MacRae proclaiming them the "Tennessee Valley Authority." I also remember MacRae's complete pancake block about 10 yards downfield that helped spring Reggie Cobb on his long TD run in the 89 Auburn game.

Oh, and 280 pounds doesn't sound like much on a 6' 10" guy. Better get him to the weight room and the training table.

It all depends on what type of passing offense you run.  If you do a lot of quick slants/dumps, then yes - it makes a huge difference if you have tall linemen and a tall or short QB.  There isn't much room for error on those types of passes.  In that kind of offense, the difference in 6'6" and 6'10" could be huge, and especially with a shorter QB.

True. I also wonder in an offense like that (where tackles would typically have to do a lot of cut blocks) whether being 6'10" makes it harder to get down, and thus execution of such plays a touch slower. Dunno.

Fantastic block without a doubt.  But what stood out to me is the hole actually filled, and Cobb made that one quick move to get to the real hole---any back in the past 5 years or so runs into the pile for no gain, or dances around until defense recovers.  We need backs with vision that make quick and decisive moves.  We have had a bunch of them, please football Gods and Coach Dooley, let us find another.

It's not a problem at all, as long as your QB is 6'7".
