What's your take on buying refurbished laptops off a site like buy.com? Thinking about getting a laptop for my daughter.

If it seems like a good deal and has at least some warranty (30 days minimum) I think it is a good thing to do.

My kids both have refurb laptops, we just refurbed them ourselves at work.

I've been thinking about doing that for a laptop for my stat guy to use during broadcasts.  Are there any particular brands to stay away from in a furbished laptop?

I haven't tried many brands. The ones I gave my kids were the last two Gateways we purchased at my company. I prefer HP laptops overall. I feel like they last longer and perform as well as anything else.

That should work great for a kid.

here is another option, little faster chip.  I never make recommendations regarding electronics and I am not now, but I have bought 2 refurb tablets from them, and both have been absolutely perfect new condition.  Based in Indy, quick shipment--all I know.  I initally found them as an Amazon marketplace vendor.  I have also always been satisfied with buy.com.

Unbelievably, I had a situation pop up today where I had to buy a refurb MacBook for some testing.

I feel so dirty.

I've always liked Macs, but Windows server would keep me from converting even if I wanted to.

My only experience came about 3 years ago, when I attempted to buy a refurbed laptop on Tiger Direct for a ridiculously low price.  The first one would not charge, so they sent me another one, and that one arrived with a shattered display.  At this point, I was iffy on trying again, but when I called them, they said they were now out of stock, so I was just screwed.  At least they refunded my money.

So that's my experience.  I won't go with a refurb again, but maybe you'll have better luck on another site.  Definitely don't go with Tiger Direct.
