I disagreed with Hamiliton on some things, but when it came to hiring football and basketball coaches he was pretty good at finding winners. Dooley hasn't won yet (and may not), but he'll at least leave the program in very good shape.
Kiffin may be a reprobate, but he can coach, and even with the NCAA stuff Pearl was absolutely worth it.

Kiffin may be a reprobate, but he can coach, and even with the NCAA stuff Pearl was absolutely worth it.
He made six major hires . . . Kiffin, Dooley, Pearl, Martin, Raleigh, and Serrano; the fact that he had to hire two coaches in each of the major sports in just 8 years as AD is a testament to how poorly he hired, IMO. Kiffin and Raleigh were disasters in different ways; Pearl was a good hire that (IMO) ended in a manner that was partially botched by Hamilton; Dooley appears to be a failed hire; Martin and Serrano are TBD. So at best I think Hamilton was 3-for-6, and that's if you count Pearl despite the way that ended and if you count Martin and Serrano where it is too early to judge. |

Like I said in an earlier thread....Time and time again, you can see that Hamilton, while a great fundrasier, knew nothing about hiring a coach. He screwed up when he fired Fulmer without having a replacement hire in his back pocket. I have greater hope in the coaching search with Hart at the helm since he was at FSU and Bama and knows what it takes to be successful in football.

I think the jury is out on Kiffin being a better than average coach. His wins vs. uga and USC were impressive, but Auburn, UCLA, Kentucky, Ole Miss and the bowl game were not.
Now he has what is likely to be his best team at USCw and has lost yet again to Stanford, and will likely drop another game or two by the end of the season.
I think he's gone from USCw in a couple years and will be basically unable to find a job.

Also, while I believe that Martin will prove to be a good hire (if he hasn't already), the hiring process itself was botched beyond belief. You don't float big names like Jamie Dixon and Jay Wright and then end up with a relative unknown. That put Martin behind the 8 ball before he even got started.  |
