We stayed in the Hilton downtown and met a wonderful Vol couple from Memphis at the hotel.  The nicest folks you'd ever want to meet.  They had 2 extra tickets and sold them to us for $60/pair.  We sat with the during the game.  Everyone, sans one fan, was so nice.  A bunch of folks watching a game and nothing getting out of hand.  Even down to the end.

your campus, which I've visited before, is more beautiful than I remembered.  Such a great stadium, great folks and wonderful tradition.  Thanks for the hospitality.

Appreciate the kind words, but you're laying it on a little thick when you use the word "beautiful" to describe our campus.  It's ugly.  You know it, and so do we.

But they're working on it, at least.

Yes . . . it is worlds better than it was 15 years ago, and once some of the construction is finished it really will be far, far better than it was when any of us were students.

Maybe it's just nostalgia (I was never a student; Tn Tech alum here, but I spent a lot of time walking around that campus as a teenager) but I think the campus has plenty of beauty just as it is. Eyesores? Lots of 'em. But those just add character.

It is better than it used to be, but still, there's only so much they can do.  They're limited by geography (surrounded on three sides by downtown Knoxville, and the other by the river) so there's no room to expand out, only up.  This also keeps open and green spaces to a minimum.  They are also hampered by some pretty moronic past zoning decisions (a sewage treatment plant adjacent to campus?  Really?).  And then there's that fizzleing railroad that cuts the campus in two.

But even with all this working against them, they still could have done a better job- they still need more architectural cohesion.  The classic brick buildings on The Hill should provide the template for the rest of the campus.  Instead, we have such mismatched monstrosities as the Spam Can, McClung Tower, and TBA (maybe the nicest arena in the league now, but it's still a hulking mass of ugly on the outside).  And don't get me started on the dorms (especially the Presidential Court), which look like 60's-era communist bloc housing.

I can understand why some think all that is ugly.. but I can't help but think it's part of the charm to me.
