I just got off the phone with one of Doug's family members...he passed away this morning. Doug has been pretty ill for a good while. Doug was from my hometown, Humboldt, Tn. Glad to say I knew Doug pretty well and we drank coffee many times together in Humboldt at the City Café over the years.

He would tell us old football war stories that would make us spit coffee out of our noses. His bicep's were bigger than my thighs and a coffee cup in his hand looked like a thimble.

All men dream: but not equally.
Those who Dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds
Wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the
Dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they
May act their dream with open eyes, to make it Possible.
This I did.

There are so many great Doug Atkins stories. Here's one:

My favorite, though, is the story about a game he was ejected from and refused to leave the field. The referee finally went to General Neyland and told the coach to get him off the field or the game would be forfeited. Neyland's response was, "YOU ejected him, YOU get him off the field."
