Battle's first year as HC at UT was my first year there.

We were 10-1 losing only to Auburn. In those days, we played Auburn and Bama every year. We beat Bama 24-0 intercepting numerous passes. If I recall correctly, Tim Priest and/or UT set a record that year for interceptions. I watched the game with a standing room only ticket and I sat on the roof of the concession stand under the upper deck. UT went to the Sugar Bowl to play Air Force and I went to the game. I had a hotel room with a balcony over Bourbon Street. One of the worst hangovers I ever had. I finally recovered by half time.

UT went 31-5 in his first three years. Unfortunately, UT went 27-16-2 over the next four years, Johnny Majors was winning a NC at Pittsburgh, and that was the end of Battle's time at UT.

Battle was decent person and probably would have had more time if not for Majors looming in the background.

My first year I think was year 3
We beat Auburn in the (2nd half) downpour on the 4th Sat in Sep
I gained 30+ walking back to our seats after the healtme show as the Pride's wool uni could soak up water
It started pouring as we marched off the field to the West

I was in stands for that game. First or second row near the five yard line. Water was running like a river down the steps. Caught a bad cold and laryngitis.

We got ahead in the game and started punting on third down.

We punted on 1st down 5 of 6 times, the 6th time we fumbled the snap on 1st down
On the last punt the ball hit at the 20, bounced to the 10 and floated to the 5 (towards the old Section X)

I started being Vols fan in Dickeys' last couple seasons, then Battle was coach for a big part of my younger days. He was a good man and a good coach. I remember him being soft spoken on the Bill Battle Show.
